City of Providence Announces Winter Rates for Providence Community Electricity Program

The City of Providence announced new winter electricity rates for its Providence Community Electricity program, effective with November 2026 meter readings through April 2027. The default residential rate will be 16.929¢ per kWh, lower than Rhode Island Energy’s Residential Last Resort Service rate of 17.029¢ per kWh, while providing 5% more clean energy sourced locally from Rhode Island projects like wind turbines and solar farms. Current participants will automatically receive the new rates without needing to take action. Additionally, customers will benefit from bill credits announced by Governor McKee’s Executive Order and the RI Energy Hold Harmless settlement, including roughly $20 credits for January to March and $14 credits starting October 2026, helping keep overall winter bills at or below summer levels despite rising supply costs. The program allows participants to switch between different electricity options or return to RI Energy supply anytime without fees. Low-income customers receive additional discounts. The City emphasizes the program’s role in supporting renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions, aligning with Mayor Brett Smiley’s commitment to a cleaner, greener Providence. More details and pricing for all customer types are available on the program’s website.
