Mayor Brett Smiley and Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez announced progress in a public safety initiative targeting illegal ATV activity, reckless driving, and disruptive gatherings around Roger Williams Park. Launched in mid-May by the Providence Police Department’s Neighborhood Response Team, the effort responds to community concerns about safety and quality of life. Since the initiative began, officers have issued numerous citations, towed vehicles, made arrests, and dispersed large illegal gatherings. Since January 2023, over 300 illegal ATVs and dirt bikes have been seized citywide, with 31 confiscated in 2026 alone, including 14 since May 15 near the park. Enforcement combines patrols on foot, bicycle, and vehicle, focusing on rapid response to gatherings often organized via social media. In addition, the City has started a pilot program temporarily closing select roads in Roger Williams Park overnight to reduce unauthorized vehicle access while maintaining emergency routes and visitor access. This pilot will be evaluated after Labor Day, with community input and further review before any permanent changes. The City plans ongoing community engagement to update residents on progress and next steps.
El alcalde de Providence, Brett Smiley, junto con el jefe de policía Oscar Perez, anunciaron avances en una iniciativa de seguridad pública en Roger Williams Park, enfocada en la reducción de actividades ilegales con vehículos todo terreno (ATV), conducción temeraria y reuniones masivas. Desde mayo, el equipo de respuesta vecinal de la policía ha intensificado la vigilancia, emitiendo 160 citaciones generales, 64 multas por música alta, 127 infracciones de estacionamiento, remolcando 14 vehículos y realizando 11 arrestos. Además, se dispersaron numerosas concentraciones ilegales con más de 100 vehículos. Desde enero de 2023, se han confiscado más de 300 ATVs y motos de cross ilegales, con 31 incautaciones solo este año.
Como parte de la estrategia, se implementó un programa piloto que cierra temporalmente ciertas vías del parque durante la noche para limitar el acceso no autorizado, sin afectar el acceso de emergencia ni la entrada de visitantes. Esta medida será evaluada tras el Día del Trabajo para decidir posibles ajustes permanentes, que requerirán revisión pública. La iniciativa busca mejorar la seguridad y calidad de vida de los residentes, garantizando que Roger Williams Park sea un espacio seguro y accesible para todos.
