Demolition of the 95-year-old Gilbert Stuart Middle School began in October 2025, sparking mixed reactions from the Providence community. The school, located on Daboll Street, had been vacant for over a year before demolition started. Long-term neighborhood residents, many people of color, expressed frustration and sadness, viewing the demolition as part of a pattern of losing important community anchors without promised progress. Rochelle Lee, a local resident and PPS Board member, highlighted the difficulty in rallying opposition due to the school’s empty status and the complex enrollment system that often sends neighborhood children to schools elsewhere.
Conversely, Providence Public School District and educational advocates supported the demolition, emphasizing the need for a modern facility better suited to current educational and accessibility standards. Susan Rohwer, from Parents Leading for Educational Equity, noted that the old building’s deteriorating condition negatively impacted students and staff. The district plans to replace the school with a new PreK-8 building designed to meet ADA requirements. To honor the historic school, a permanent exhibition featuring oral histories and memorabilia will be created, preserving its legacy amid the transformation.
