The Port of Providence, a heavily industrialized waterfront facing climate threats like rising sea levels and storms, is undergoing a community-driven climate resilience project. In June 2026, a coalition including the Providence Resilience Partnership (PRP), City of Providence Planning Department, NOAA, and local nonprofits presented initial results from a three-year initiative funded by a $492,000 grant from the Biden-Harris Administration. The project, titled “Catalyzing Citizen Engagement in Port of Providence Climate Resilience and Habitat Restoration,” focuses on the shoreline between Collier Point Park and Sassafras Cove, areas vulnerable to environmental risks.

The initiative combines scientific climate risk data with extensive community involvement, particularly engaging residents from South Providence and Washington Park neighborhoods.
