New Urban Arts (NUA), a Providence nonprofit founded in 1997, provides a free, drop-in afterschool studio for high school students across Rhode Island to explore art on their own terms. Operating weekdays from 2 to 6 p.m., NUA serves over 1,000 youth annually through various projects, workshops, and exhibitions. The organization emphasizes creating a safe, inclusive environment where students feel seen, heard, and valued, encouraging them to expand their sense of possibility. NUA offers flagship programs such as Youth Mentorship in the Arts, pairing students with artist mentors, and the Life After School (ALAS) program, which supports college and job preparation while providing microgrants and summer internships. Since 2017, the NUA Knights partnership has brought youth-led activities directly into Central High School, offering diverse after-school options. Under Executive Director Jannelle Codianni, NUA focuses on empowering students through trusted adult relationships and community connection. The organization is also expanding collaborations with other youth groups and engaging alumni to sustain its mission of fostering agency, connection, and belonging through creative expression.

Fundada en 1997 por estudiantes universitarios y de secundaria, NUA ofrece un espacio seguro y gratuito donde adolescentes pueden explorar diversas formas artísticas de manera libre y autónoma. Abierto de lunes a viernes, el estudio atiende a más de 1,000 estudiantes anualmente, brindando recursos y mentoría que fomentan el desarrollo personal y artístico, especialmente para quienes enfrentan barreras sistémicas.
