New Urban Arts (NUA), a Providence nonprofit founded in 1997, provides a free, drop-in afterschool studio where high school students from across Rhode Island can explore and create art in a supportive environment. Serving over 1,000 students annually through workshops, projects, and exhibitions, NUA emphasizes youth empowerment by fostering a space where students feel seen, heard, and valued. The organization offers flagship programs such as Youth Mentorship in the Arts, pairing students with artist mentors, and the Life After School (ALAS) program, which assists juniors and seniors with college and career preparation, including microgrants and summer internships.

NUA also partners with Central High School through the NUA Knights initiative, delivering youth-led after-school activities ranging from cooking clubs to eSports. Executive Director Jannelle Codianni credits the organization’s success to its dedicated staff who prioritize genuine care and support for students. Despite challenges, NUA is expanding its network through collaborations with other youth organizations and alumni engagement. Its mission remains focused on fostering agency, connection, and belonging through creative expression, ensuring young people have a safe space to be themselves and envision promising futures.
