Casandra and her husband, both lifelong artists, own Public Shop & Gallery, a creative space in Providence they opened in 2019 on Manton Avenue. Although they have lived in Providence for seven years, the physical gallery has operated for two. The space combines a shop featuring local artists’ work, in partnership with Symposium Books, and a gallery that displays a curated collection of art pieces, which have recently shifted from rotating local exhibits to longer-term displays. Public Shop & Gallery hosts various events such as art parties and open mics, attracting visitors who often return for the vibrant programming.

As first-generation Americans, Casandra emphasizes the importance of creating an inclusive, community-driven space in a city where the creative scene has historically favored privileged groups connected to institutions like RISD and Brown. She recalls the loss of community hubs like the Providence Black Repertory Company and hopes their gallery can fill that void. Despite remaining relatively underground after seven years, Casandra envisions the gallery evolving to meet the changing needs of its community while proudly reflecting their artistic identity. She also values Providence’s rich culture, food scene, and local economy.
