Mayor Brett Smiley and Providence Fire Chief Derek Silva announced the addition of a new rescue apparatus and the hiring of 16 firefighters, funded through federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) programs. The new rescue vehicle, equipped with advanced tools and technology, will enhance the department’s emergency response capabilities. The 16 new firefighters will improve staffing levels, response times, and overall safety for both personnel and the community. Chief Silva emphasized the importance of these investments for protecting Providence residents and supporting firefighters. The Providence Fire Department expressed gratitude to the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation for securing the federal funding. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse highlighted the critical role of firefighters and praised the federal support for equipment and staffing. City Council Majority Leader Pedro J. Espinal welcomed the new recruits and acknowledged the ongoing need for training and resources. The rescue apparatus will be operational soon, while the new firefighters are currently training and expected to graduate in June before deployment across the city.

Estas inversiones buscan fortalecer la capacidad de respuesta ante emergencias y mejorar la seguridad pública en toda la ciudad. El nuevo equipo cuenta con tecnología avanzada para optimizar las intervenciones, mientras que el aumento de personal permitirá reducir tiempos de respuesta y garantizar la seguridad de los bomberos y la comunidad. El Departamento de Bomberos de Providence agradeció el respaldo de la delegación congresional de Rhode Island, cuya gestión fue clave para asegurar estos recursos. Los bomberos contratados están en proceso de capacitación en la Academia de Bomberos de Providence y se espera que se incorporen a sus estaciones tras graduarse en junio.
