The Providence Eye Hires First Full-Time Reporter As Staff Continues to Grow

The Providence Eye, a nonprofit online news outlet launched in 2023, has hired its first full-time reporter, Eric Halvarson, who joined on February 9. Halvarson, a Providence resident since 2022 and Appalachian State University graduate, was previously a regular contributor and part of the Eye’s inaugural News Fellows cohort. His reporting has covered a wide range of local issues, including city planning, public transit cuts, protests, rent control, and the Brown University shooting. Founder and publisher Debbie Schimberg highlighted that hiring a full-time reporter will enhance the Eye’s ability to cover important stories more thoroughly and respond better to community tips. The publication, which also has a managing editor and a part-time development director, remains largely volunteer-driven. Board president Fraser Lang called Halvarson’s hiring a significant milestone that supports the Eye’s mission to inform and empower Providence residents. Halvarson expressed enthusiasm for joining a local news outlet focused on authentic, community-rooted journalism free from corporate influence. The Eye continues to seek volunteers and supporters to expand its hyper-local coverage.

Halvarson, colaborador habitual desde agosto de 2025, formó parte de la primera generación de becarios del medio y ha cubierto temas relevantes como la planificación de ProvPort, recortes en el transporte público, protestas anti-ICE, legislación de control de rentas y el tiroteo en Brown University. La fundadora y editora, Debbie Schimberg, destacó que esta contratación permitirá ampliar la cobertura y responder mejor a las inquietudes de la comunidad.
