Greater RI Board of Rabbis: We Encourage A “No” Vote on Providence’s Divestment Question.

The Greater Rhode Island Board of Rabbis has urged Providence voters to reject Question 7, a divestment ballot initiative targeting Israel. The Board argues that since Providence holds no direct foreign investments and lacks authority over foreign policy, the measure would have no practical impact on the conflict. Instead, it would impose unnecessary administrative burdens on the city. The campaign’s focus solely on Israel, without addressing other parties involved or promoting broader ethical investment principles, risks unfairly singling out the Jewish community and fostering division. The Board highlights that the initiative has caused anxiety and isolation among local Jewish residents, undermining trust and communal unity. While acknowledging the sincere desire for justice and peace behind the measure, the rabbis emphasize that targeting one side deepens polarization and fails to advance genuine peace. They call on residents to prioritize thoughtful dialogue, humanitarian aid, and interfaith cooperation to promote lasting peace for Israelis, Palestinians, and all affected by the conflict. The Board is led by Rabbi Barry Dolinger and Rabbi Jeffrey Goldwasser, both active advocates for social justice and community well-being.
