Creando Cambio: Cómo New Urban Arts Transforma A Jóvenes A Través De La Expresión
New Urban Arts (NUA), a Providence nonprofit founded in 1997, provides a free, drop-in afterschool studio for Rhode Island high school students to explore creative expression in a supportive environment. Serving over 1,000 youth annually, NUA offers tools, resources, and mentorship to help students overcome barriers to artistic opportunities. The organization emphasizes listening and encouragement, fostering a space where young people feel seen, heard, and valued. Under Executive Director Jannelle Codianni, NUA runs flagship programs including Youth Mentorship in the Arts, which pairs students with artist mentors, and the Life After School (ALAS) program that supports college and career readiness with internships, microgrants, and exhibitions. Since 2017, the NUA Knights initiative has brought youth-led activities directly into Central High School, expanding engagement through diverse clubs. Codianni credits the dedicated staff for creating a lasting impact on students’ futures by nurturing empowerment and acceptance. Looking ahead, NUA aims to deepen community ties, involve alumni, and maintain its mission of fostering agency, connection, and belonging through creative expression for all youth.
New Urban Arts (NUA), una organización sin fines de lucro fundada en 1997 en Providence, Rhode Island, ofrece un espacio seguro y gratuito para que jóvenes de secundaria exploren y creen arte de manera libre. Inicialmente un pequeño programa de mentoría, NUA ha crecido hasta atender a más de 1,000 estudiantes anualmente a través de talleres, proyectos y exposiciones. Abierto de lunes a viernes, el estudio permite que los jóvenes accedan a recursos artísticos pese a barreras sistémicas, fomentando la autoexpresión y el empoderamiento.
Bajo la dirección de Jannelle Codianni, NUA promueve un ambiente donde los estudiantes se sienten valorados y apoyados, lo que amplía sus posibilidades personales y creativas.
