Sophie Foulkes, a local artist and Creative Fellow at the Providence Public Library (PPL), explores the layered history of Rhode Island’s landscapes in her current exhibition, By the Fall of the Waters, on display through September at PPL’s Joan T. Boghossian Gallery. Drawing on extensive research in PPL’s special collections, including historical maps dating from the 1800s to today, Foulkes highlights how rivers, roads, and buildings evolve over time. Her work combines illustration, collage, and printmaking, creating colorful, textured pieces that evoke nostalgia and the passage of time. Central to the show are two Rhode Island landmarks: Slater Mill in Pawtucket and Providence Place Mall, both symbolic of the state’s riverside economic history. The exhibition’s title derives from metal printing blocks used in mid-20th-century tourism materials, which Foulkes incorporated into her collages with the help of master printmaker Jacques Bidon. By layering archival materials with contemporary drawings and photographs, Foulkes reflects on the tension between urban development and lived experience, inviting viewers to connect past and present perspectives. The exhibition runs through September 30, with the artist appearing at RISD Craft on October 10.
