James Joseph Burns, a respected pilot and former firefighter, passed away on September 7, 2026, after a brief illness. Born in Providence to Rachel M. Levesque and James E. Burns, he was the cherished brother of the late Lorraine Decesaris and Regina Blair. After serving honorably in the US Airforce, Burns spent 14 years with the Providence Fire Department, notably being sworn in as a firefighter while hospitalized from a fall during a fire rescue. Transitioning to aviation, he worked as a flight instructor and pilot before joining Fram Aviation, where he rose to Chief Pilot and Director of Flight Operations. Later, he flew for Eastern Airlines, advancing to Captain on the Boeing 727. After Eastern’s closure in 1991, he flew part-time for Textron and then joined CVS Health in 1993 as Captain, piloting their Citation 10 jet globally. Recognized for his dedication, Burns received the FAA’s Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award in 2022. Beyond flying, he was a certified ski instructor, Providence Police Reserve Officer, and held the rank of Major in the Rhode Island Civil Air Patrol. He continued mentoring pilots in retirement and was known for his humor and love of flying. Burial will be private.
James Joseph Burns falleció el 7 de septiembre de 2026 tras una breve enfermedad. Nacido en Providence, fue hijo de Rachel M. Levesque y James E. Burns, y hermano de la fallecida Lorraine Decesaris y Regina Blair. Tras un honorable servicio en la Fuerza Aérea de Estados Unidos, Burns dedicó 14 años como bombero en el Departamento de Bomberos de Providence, donde fue juramentado mientras se recuperaba de una caída durante una emergencia. Posteriormente, trabajó como instructor de vuelo y piloto en North Central Airport, y en 1976 se unió a Fram Aviation, donde llegó a ser piloto jefe y director de operaciones de vuelo.
Más tarde, fue ingeniero de vuelo y capitán en Eastern Airlines hasta su cierre en 1991, y luego piloto a tiempo parcial para Textron Corporation. En 1993, fue contratado por CVS Health para pilotar su jet Citation 10, realizando vuelos ejecutivos y de clientes por América, Europa y el Caribe. Reconocido por su trayectoria de más de 50 años, recibió en 2022 el prestigioso Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award de la FAA. Además, fue instructor de esquí, oficial de reserva de la policía de Providence y mayor en la Civil Air Patrol de Rhode Island. En retiro, continuó formando pilotos y disfrutaba de la navegación y el vuelo recreativo. Su funeral será privado.
