This summer marks the 100th anniversary of H.P. Lovecraft’s iconic story, The Call of Cthulhu, a foundational work in the Cthulhu Mythos and the genre of weird fiction. To celebrate, over 1,500 fans, authors, and artists gathered in Providence, Rhode Island, for NecronomiCon, a biennial convention honoring Lovecraft’s cosmic horror legacy. Attendees participated in panels, plays, concerts, and art sales inspired by Lovecraft’s work, while also confronting the author’s racist views and exploring diverse creative interpretations within the genre.

Providence, Lovecraft’s birthplace and the setting for many of his stories, draws tourists worldwide to landmarks like his home, grave, and local sites featured in his fiction. The city’s rich literary history and unique atmosphere provide an ideal backdrop for the convention. Visitors appreciate Providence’s historic architecture and intimate scale compared to larger cities. Beyond Lovecraft, the city is linked to other notable authors, but NecronomiCon remains the largest celebration of weird fiction there. The event highlights Lovecraft’s enduring influence on horror and speculative fiction, as well as ongoing conversations about his complex legacy.
