“Not Just Tapes” is an art exhibition currently on display at the Providence Public Library’s Joan T. Boghassian Gallery through August 15. The show features a collection of over 600 bootleg Bollywood VHS tapes, originally sourced from the basement of a local Indian restaurant, Not Just Snacks. Curated by Ben Sisto of OPEN, Rebecca Noon of Providence’s Department of Art, Culture, and Tourism, and Neal Walsh of AS220, the exhibit recreates a nostalgic living room setting with the tapes displayed on shelves and a CRT TV playing one of the films. The tapes, labeled in pastel colors, reflect a cultural practice where Indian families borrowed or rented bootleg VHS tapes to stay connected with their heritage while living abroad. The exhibition also includes performances by dancers Gayatri Kunchay and Shany Rajagopalan, enhancing the immersive experience. “Not Just Tapes” is the inaugural show in a new series of volunteer-curated art installations aimed at utilizing the library’s gallery space more fully. The project highlights the intersection of cultural memory, community, and art through this unique audiovisual archive.
La exposición “Not Just Tapes” se presenta en la galería Joan T. Boghassian de la Biblioteca Pública de Providence hasta el 15 de agosto. La muestra exhibe una colección de más de 600 cintas VHS bootleg de Bollywood y películas en idioma hindi, que fueron recopiladas en el restaurante Not Just Snacks. Esta iniciativa es resultado de la colaboración entre Ben Sisto, fundador de OPEN; Rebecca Noon, del Departamento de Arte, Cultura y Turismo de Providence; y Neal Walsh, de AS220, quienes voluntariamente curaron la exhibición para aprovechar un espacio subutilizado en la biblioteca.
Las cintas, con etiquetas de colores pastel, reflejan una práctica común en comunidades indias de compartir o rentar videos en tiendas locales, permitiendo mantener un vínculo cultural y una nostalgia entre familias inmigrantes. En la inauguración, los asistentes pudieron explorar los títulos expuestos y ver proyecciones en un ambiente que recrea una sala de estar familiar, además de disfrutar de presentaciones de danza a cargo de Gayatri Kunchay y Shany Rajagopalan. La muestra busca celebrar y preservar esta forma singular de conexión cultural a través del cine popular.
