After years of advocacy by groups such as the People’s Port Authority and the Washington Park Neighborhood Association, progress may be underway. On June 23, 2026, a coalition of residents, organizations, and city departments hosted an event called “Envisioning Resilience: The Providence Waterfront” to showcase the outcomes of a community engagement process that began in 2023. The initiative explores ways to turn the Port from a health burden into a neighborhood asset, with proposals including a pedestrian boardwalk and natural shoreline restoration using native wildlife to filter polluted water. Residents expressed initial skepticism but appreciated the inclusive dialogue involving diverse community members. The project, supported by the Providence Resilience Partnership and funded by a NOAA grant, integrates scientific analysis with local input, emphasizing habitat restoration, climate resilience, and public health improvements.
