The Rhode Island Center for the Book has unveiled “I Hear America Singing,” a 250-line collaborative poem created by students from across Rhode Island. Inspired by Walt Whitman’s classic poem “I Hear America Singing,” this new work was developed during poetry workshops held throughout the 2025–2026 school year. These workshops were led by Tina Cane, Rhode Island’s Poet Laureate Emeritus and Director of Writers-in-the-Schools. The poem celebrates Rhode Island and the nation’s 250th anniversary by capturing the diverse voices and experiences of young Rhode Islanders. This project highlights the creativity and spirit of the state’s youth while honoring American heritage. The initiative and the poem were featured by The Providence Eye.
El Centro del Libro de Rhode Island ha presentado “I Hear America Singing”, un poema colaborativo de 250 versos que reúne las voces de estudiantes de todo el estado. Inspirado en el poema homónimo de Walt Whitman, este proyecto fue desarrollado durante el año escolar 2025-2026 en talleres de poesía dirigidos por Tina Cane, directora del programa Writers-in-the-Schools y poetisa laureada emérita de Rhode Island. La obra celebra tanto Rhode Island como el 250 aniversario de Estados Unidos, reflejando la diversidad y el espíritu de los jóvenes residentes de la región. Esta iniciativa busca fomentar la participación literaria y cultural entre los estudiantes, destacando la importancia de la poesía como medio de expresión y conexión comunitaria.
