WaterFire, a renowned public art event along the Providence River, will celebrate its 500th lighting in 2026, marking a significant milestone since its inception in 1994. To honor this achievement, WaterFire is inviting community members to become one of 500 Milestone Torchbearers during the 2026 season. Torchbearers will actively participate in the lighting ceremony by carrying flaming torches down the steps of the basin at Waterplace Park, standing where light meets water to help ignite the fires. Each participant will receive a commemorative photo to remember their role in this ritual. The torch procession is limited to 50 people per lighting, offering an intimate experience that connects participants directly to the event’s core. Executive Artistic Director Barnaby Evans emphasized the importance of community involvement in sustaining WaterFire’s future and continuing its legacy of bringing people together through fire, water, music, and shared celebration. Interested individuals must be comfortable carrying a 2-pound torch and walking down multiple steps. Spots are limited and expected to fill quickly. Para conmemorar esta ocasión, la organización invita a la comunidad a participar activamente como “Portadores de la Antorcha”, un rol especial que permitirá a 500 personas encender las hogueras durante las ceremonias de iluminación. Cada participante descenderá los escalones del basamento en Waterplace Park, portando una antorcha encendida y formando parte central del ritual que caracteriza a WaterFire. Los portadores recibirán una fotografía conmemorativa del momento. La ceremonia comienza al atardecer, con una reunión previa para instrucciones de seguridad, y la antorcha se sostiene durante aproximadamente 15 minutos en el recorrido. Barnaby Evans, director artístico ejecutivo, destacó la importancia de esta celebración y la invitación a que la comunidad garantice el futuro del evento.
