The Providence River Pedestrian Bridge Connects the City
El Puente Peatonal Del Río Providence Conecta La Ciudad
The Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge, also called the Providence River Pedestrian Bridge, opened in August 2019 to connect the Fox Point neighborhood on the East Side with the Innovation & Design District. The 450-foot bridge repurposes the old I-195 highway bridge piers and features a deck made of Brazilian Ipe wood, wooden benches, built-in chessboards, and illuminated tables. At each end, urban parks host pop-up vendors, entertainment, and food trucks.
On the east side, visitors can enjoy restaurants like Hemenway’s, Dave’s Coffee, Bacaro, and Geoff’s Superlative Sandwiches, alongside shops along South Main Street. The west side offers a larger park area with seasonal vendors and performers from spring to fall. The 195 District Park Pavilion hosts The Guild’s beer garden and Seven Stars Bakery, serving as a year-round event space.
Additional attractions include Blu Violet rooftop bar with waterfront views, patio dining at Dune Brothers Seafood and Bayberry Garden, and the Providence Flea market on summer Sundays. The bridge is accessible from Dyer Street on the west and South Water Street on the east, enhancing pedestrian connectivity and urban engagement.

Van Leesten, conocido también como el Puente Peatonal del Río Providence, conecta el barrio Fox Point, en el lado este de la ciudad, con el emergente Distrito de Innovación y Diseño en el oeste. Inaugurado en agosto de 2019, este puente reutiliza los pilotes del antiguo puente de la autopista I-195 y se extiende 137 metros sobre el río Providence. Su tablero está construido con madera Ipe brasileña e incluye bancos, tableros de ajedrez y mesas iluminadas. En ambos extremos del puente se encuentran parques urbanos que suelen albergar vendedores temporales, entretenimiento y camiones de comida.
En el lado este, la zona ofrece restaurantes como Hemenway’s y Dave’s Coffee, además de tiendas a lo largo de South Main Street, complementadas por un mapa para recorrer a pie el área histórica. En el oeste, el parque 195 District Park Pavilion acoge eventos durante todo el año y cuenta con espacios como el jardín de cerveza de The Guild y la panadería Seven Stars. El área también destaca por bares en azoteas, como Blu Violet, y mercados al aire libre como Providence Flea en verano. El puente está accesible desde Dyer Street en el oeste y South Water Street en el este, facilitando la conexión entre estos vibrantes sectores de Providence.
