The full WaterFire lighting event scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026, in Rhode Island has been cancelled due to the forecast of a significant nor’easter expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds. Organizers cited safety concerns for attendees, artists, vendors, volunteers, and staff as the primary reason for the cancellation, emphasizing that such a decision is rare and made with careful consideration. In response, the full WaterFire lighting has been rescheduled for Saturday, October 24, 2026. This event will feature vendors, onshore programming, and community activities, with fires burning from sunset until 10:00 PM. Additional WaterFire events are planned throughout October, including a partial lighting on October 3 and a full lighting on October 17, presented by the United Way of Rhode Island. Another event will take place on October 29 at the Michael S. Van Leesten Pedestrian Bridge. Organizers are currently finalizing details for the October 24 event and will provide updates in the coming weeks.
