Rudy Cheeks, a prominent figure in Providence’s creative underground and longtime Providence Phoenix columnist, died at 76 after a prolonged illness. Born Bruce McCrae, Cheeks gained early recognition in the mid-1970s performing with bands The Fabulous Motels and The Young Adults during a vibrant era for Rhode Island’s rock scene. He became best known for co-writing the satirical column Phillipe & Jorge’s Cool, Cool World with Chip Young, which humorously critiqued Rhode Island politicians and culture through the voices of two fictional, flamboyantly gay characters. The column, inspired by British satire and alternative press traditions, ran for decades and became a local institution, known for its sharp wit and memorable political nicknames. Cheeks also worked as a morning radio co-host and cable show host, and was a founding board member of the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame.
