RISD Museum Puts Spotlight on Diversity

The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum in Providence is highlighting diversity through its exhibitions and programs. Earlier this year, the museum hosted its third Black Biennial, curated by RISD students Karma Johnson, Khalil McKnight, and King Meulens. The exhibit, titled “Please Catch Me When I Fall,” showcased over 50 works by Black artists from RISD and the local community, emphasizing cross-diasporic perspectives and themes of joy, vulnerability, and resilience. The curators stressed the importance of community support and celebrating differences within the Black experience.
The museum also features a range of exhibitions blending historical and contemporary art. Notable displays include the Barkan Contemporary Ceramic Collection, Shimmering Beauty: Kingfishers in Art and Poetry, and The Flower, the Labor, and the Sea, which explore artistic traditions and cultural exchanges. New exhibitions focus on nature and heritage, such as Indigenous artists honoring the seal and Japanese woodblock prints paired with poetry. Through workshops and events like Collector’s Journey and Museum at Night, RISD Museum fosters engagement and reflection, reinforcing its role as a vibrant cultural hub.

Este año, el museo presentó la tercera edición de la Black Biennial, una muestra curada por estudiantes que reunió más de 50 obras multidisciplinarias de artistas negros locales y de la escuela, explorando la experiencia afrodescendiente con énfasis en la alegría, la vulnerabilidad y la resiliencia. La exhibición “Please Catch Me When I Fall” enfatizó la importancia de la comunidad y la celebración de las diferencias dentro de la diáspora negra. Además, el museo ofrece colecciones permanentes y temporales que abarcan desde cerámicas contemporáneas hasta arte asiático, como la exhibición “Shimmering Beauty: Kingfishers in Art and Poetry” y textiles históricos en “The Flower, the Labor, and the Sea”. Entre las novedades se encuentran exposiciones dedicadas a la naturaleza y el patrimonio, como “Natchiq | Onkeehq | Isuwiq: Indigenous Artists Honor the Seal”, que honra la relación ancestral con el mar, y una muestra de grabados japoneses del siglo XIX.
