Although the state received approval two years ago to resume collecting tolls, RIDOT now faces significant financial challenges. As a result, the agency has delayed plans to reintroduce tolls on trucks, citing the need for a new, updated system before toll collection can resume. This postponement means that truck tolls, initially expected to return sooner, will remain inactive for several more years. RIDOT’s decision highlights the financial and logistical hurdles involved in maintaining and upgrading transportation infrastructure. The department continues to evaluate options but has confirmed that toll collection will not restart until the new system is fully implemented, which is projected to be no earlier than 2027.
