Rhode Island Hospital Resident Physicians Ratify First Union Contract

Los Médicos Residentes Del Rhode Island Hospital Ratifican Su Primer Contrato Sindical

Date: Oct 23, 2026 23 de October, 2026

Nearly 700 resident physicians and fellows at Rhode Island Hospital have ratified their first union contract, marking a significant milestone for the group represented by the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR/SEIU). The agreement, approved by 95% of voting members, includes a 12% base pay increase, reduced health insurance premiums, enhanced retirement benefits with a 401(k) employer match of up to 6%, and improved workplace accommodations for lactating mothers. The contract runs through June 30, 2029.

This contract follows a lengthy organizing and negotiation process that began in 2024, culminating in unionization after a 2025 election—the first such union for resident physicians in Rhode Island. The unionization efforts intensified earlier this year with rallies and petitions highlighting low wages and demanding compensation more aligned with regional costs and workloads. Residents described their work as essential to hospital operations and expressed relief that the negotiations concluded without a strike.

Rhode Island Hospital praised the collaborative negotiations and emphasized its commitment to quality patient care and medical education. Meanwhile, union contract talks continue at three other Rhode Island hospitals within the Care New England network.
