Festival De Cine Negro De Rhode Island: Celebrando La Cultura Negra En El Cine
The Rhode Island Black Film Festival, now in its ninth year, will be held from April 16 to 19, 2026, showcasing films that highlight African-American, Afro-Caribbean, and Afro-Latino experiences. The festival features works by both emerging and established filmmakers and offers free screenings across multiple venues to engage the community. Key films this year include “Cape Verdean Cranberry: The Fernandes Family Story,” which explores Cape Verdean immigrants’ connection to the cranberry industry in southern Massachusetts; “Through Her Eyes: The Evolution of Providence Alumnae,” documenting 55 years of sisterhood and social activism by the Providence Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; and “The Dichotomy of Hattie McDaniel,” about the first African-American Oscar nominee. Additionally, Beyond the Lens Academy, in partnership with Johnson & Wales University, will provide high school students with a two-day immersive experience learning about careers in filmmaking. Alongside screenings and panel discussions, some films will be available virtually after the festival, broadening access to these important cultural stories.
El Rhode Island Black Film Festival, que en 2026 celebra su novena edición del 16 al 19 de abril, presenta una selección de cine afroamericano, afrocaribeño y afrolatino, con obras de cineastas emergentes y consagrados. El evento ofrece una serie de proyecciones gratuitas en diversos lugares, acercando el cine a la comunidad local. Entre los títulos destacados están “Cape Verdean Cranberry: The Fernandes Family Story”, que explora la relación entre inmigrantes caboverdianos y la industria del arándano en Massachusetts; “Through Her Eyes: The Evolution of Providence Alumnae”, que celebra 55 años de hermandad y acción social de la sororidad Delta Sigma Theta en Providence; y “The Dichotomy of Hattie McDaniel”, sobre la primera afroamericana nominada al Oscar. Además de las exhibiciones y paneles, el festival incluye una colaboración educativa entre Beyond the Lens Academy y la Universidad Johnson & Wales, que brinda a estudiantes de secundaria la oportunidad de aprender sobre las carreras detrás de la industria cinematográfica.
