Providence Commemoration Lab Book: On-Line Version
Libro Del Laboratorio De Conmemoración De Providence: Versión En Línea
The Providence Commemoration Lab, funded by the Mellon Foundation and the American Rescue Plan, was a collaborative initiative between the Department of Art, Culture and Tourism (ACT) and the Rhode Island Historical Society (RIHS) from 2023 to 2025. The program aimed to explore new ways of understanding commemoration through temporary projects on public property, focusing on historical redress and spatial reclamation. Nine creative practitioners were commissioned to examine how Providence residents construct and share memory and culture at three sites: Columbus Square, Roger Williams Park, and Public Street. These artists participated in year-long residencies starting in spring 2024, supported by a total budget of $1.4 million over two years. As a culmination of the project, ACT and RIHS collaborated with Studio Loba and bookmaker Ruchika Nambiar to produce a limited-edition book that documents the Lab’s story, featuring contributions from artists, administrators, researchers, and writers. Two hundred physical copies are available across various local libraries and cultural institutions, while an online version is also accessible to the public.
El Providence Commemoration Lab fue un programa financiado por la Mellon Foundation y el American Rescue Plan, y coadministrado por el Departamento de Arte, Cultura y Turismo (ACT) y la Sociedad Histórica de Rhode Island (RIHS). Entre 2023 y 2025, el laboratorio desarrolló proyectos temporales en espacios públicos de Providence que exploraron la conmemoración como un proceso comunitario de reparación histórica y recuperación del espacio. Nueve artistas fueron seleccionados para residencias de un año, iniciadas en la primavera de 2024, en tres sitios emblemáticos: Columbus Square, Roger Williams Park y Public Street. Con un presupuesto total de 1.4 millones de dólares, el proyecto buscó nuevas formas de entender cómo los residentes construyen y comparten memoria y cultura. Como cierre del programa, ACT y RIHS encargaron a Studio Loba y a la editora Ruchika Nambiar la creación de un libro que documenta integralmente el desarrollo del laboratorio, incluyendo testimonios de artistas, administradores e investigadores.
