Neutaconkanut Park, located on Providence’s western edge, has been designated as the city’s newest National Register Historic District, recognizing its rich historical and cultural significance. The park offers diverse attractions, including scenic views, a skatepark, and natural features like glacial boulders and red-bellied woodpeckers. The designation follows decades of advocacy, notably by Elli Panichas, founder of the Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy, who passed away shortly before the district’s approval. The National Register listing highlights the park’s importance in local planning, development, and recreation, but its history extends much further. Neutaconkanut Hill, known as “Notquonckanet” in early records, was a ceremonial site for the Narragansett tribe before European settlement. Tribal members emphasize the hill’s sacredness as a high place where ceremonies, including Sunrise Ceremonies, continue to be held. The designation not only honors the park’s recreational and historical value but also acknowledges its ongoing cultural significance to the Narragansett people. This recognition ensures protection and awareness of Neutaconkanut’s multifaceted heritage for future generations.

Este parque municipal, además de ofrecer atractivos recreativos como un skatepark y vistas panorámicas, posee una profunda relevancia histórica y cultural. Su importancia se remonta a tiempos anteriores a la colonización europea, siendo un lugar ceremonial para la tribu Narragansett. Según Lorén Spears, directora ejecutiva del Museo Tomaquag, el área albergaba estructuras ceremoniales que hoy podrían estar alteradas, pero que reflejan su valor ancestral. Sherenté Harris, miembro de la tribu Narragansett, destacó que Neutaconkanut Hill sigue siendo un sitio sagrado donde se realizan ceremonias, como la del amanecer, vinculadas a la conexión espiritual entre la tierra y el cielo. La nominación al Registro Nacional de Lugares Históricos, administrado por el Servicio de Parques Nacionales, fue impulsada por la historiadora Sarah Zurier y la activista Elli Panichas, fundadora de la Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy, quien falleció poco antes de la aprobación oficial. Este reconocimiento protege y visibiliza un espacio clave para la historia y la cultura local.
