Mayor Smiley emphasized that the executive order aims to protect immigrant communities from fear and uncertainty caused by federal immigration actions, ensuring city property serves the community rather than enforcement efforts. The order also directs the Providence Police Department not to act as immigration officers or inquire about individuals’ immigration status and prohibits city departments from proactively collaborating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). City departments are tasked with identifying relevant properties and installing signage to clearly prohibit civil immigration enforcement activities. The order does not affect the enforcement of criminal laws or lawful federal activities unrelated to immigration enforcement staging on city property.
