Marifrances (Kelly) McGinn, a pioneering attorney and longtime legal leader at Providence College, passed away peacefully at her home in Rumford, Rhode Island, surrounded by family. Born on April 27, 1948, in Providence, she earned a history degree from Salve Regina University and a law degree from Suffolk University. McGinn made history as the first woman appointed City Solicitor of Pawtucket from 1980 to 1982. She practiced law for 17 years at McMahon & McMahon in Providence, specializing in civil and education law, before joining Providence College full-time. For over 20 years, she served as the college’s Vice President and General Counsel, becoming the institution’s first female vice president and the first woman in its Senior Cabinet. She retired in 2019 and was honored with an honorary degree by the college that same year. McGinn was active in numerous professional and community organizations, including the Rhode Island Women Lawyers Association and various educational boards. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Hon. V. Paul McGinn, their children, grandchildren, and extended family. Donations in her memory may be made to Providence College’s Emergency Student Support Fund.
