For over 75 years, Pedroso and his wife Maria ran the market at 126 Brook Street, a cornerstone for the Portuguese-American and Cape Verdean communities. The store offered authentic Portuguese goods like imported sardines, pottery, sausage, and cheese, serving as a cultural hub for immigrants seeking a connection to their homeland. Born in New Bedford but raised in Portugal until age 22, Pedroso returned to Fox Point to establish Friends Market as a welcoming space during a time of neighborhood transformation.
In recognition of their dedication, Manuel and Maria Pedroso received the Order of Merit from the President of Portugal in 2024. The City of Providence also honored Manuel with an honorary street named Pedroso Way near the market in 2022. Friends and neighbors remember Pedroso as a kind and resilient figure who encouraged courage and community spirit. His passing marks the end of an era for Fox Point, leaving a lasting legacy of perseverance and cultural pride.

Durante más de 75 años, Pedroso y su esposa María dirigieron esta tienda ubicada en 126 Brook Street, que se convirtió en un punto de encuentro para la comunidad portuguesa y otras comunidades inmigrantes, ofreciendo productos tradicionales como sardinas importadas, cerámica, embutidos y quesos. Nacido en New Bedford y criado en Portugal, Pedroso regresó a Estados Unidos a los 22 años y adquirió Friends Market, creando un espacio donde los inmigrantes portugueses podían encontrar un pedazo de su tierra natal. La tienda fue un oasis en un barrio en constante transformación a lo largo del siglo XX.
