I’m A Photographer Who Lives Downtown. When the Blizzard Hit, I Knew It Was My Chance to Document History.

David Lawlor, a Rhode Island-based photographer and filmmaker living downtown Providence, seized the opportunity presented by the Blizzard of 2026 to document the historic storm. Inspired by past storm photography he encountered while interviewing a former Providence Journal photography head, Lawlor was eager to capture the city’s transformation during the blizzard. Although advised by his mother to stay indoors, he ventured out just before sunset on February 23, witnessing a snow-covered downtown with empty streets and frosted stoplights. The quiet, pedestrian-friendly scene allowed him to capture unique images and drone footage, marking his first drone flight in a year. Living at AS220 gave Lawlor a personal connection to the event, motivating him to preserve this moment for future generations. He reflected on the importance of documenting such events, knowing that decades from now, people will look back at his photos and remember the Blizzard of 2026. Lawlor’s work focuses on revealing overlooked urban stories, blending past and present through visual storytelling.
David Lawlor, fotógrafo y cineasta residente en el centro de Providence, aprovechó la histórica tormenta de nieve conocida como la Blizzard de 2026 para documentar el impacto del fenómeno en la ciudad. Inspirado por relatos y fotografías de tormentas pasadas, especialmente la Blizzard de 1978, Lawlor decidió capturar imágenes y videos mientras la ciudad se transformaba bajo la nieve. A pesar de las advertencias de su madre para no salir durante la tormenta, esperó hasta el atardecer del 23 de febrero para recorrer las calles desiertas, cubiertas por completo de nieve y hielo. Utilizando también un dron, logró obtener imágenes aéreas que reflejan la magnitud del evento. Para Lawlor, vivir en el centro de Providence le permitió registrar de manera directa y personal cómo la ciudad cambiaba, creando un archivo visual que espera sea valorado en el futuro. Su trabajo se enmarca en su interés por explorar y preservar la historia urbana y arquitectónica de Nueva Inglaterra mediante relatos visuales que conectan el pasado con el presente. La Blizzard de 2026 quedó así inmortalizada gracias a su labor documental.
