WaterFire Providence honored three distinguished Rhode Islanders at its 9th Annual FireBall Gala with Impact Awards recognizing their significant contributions to the community. Valerie Tutson received the Creative Impact Award for her work as a nationally acclaimed storyteller and cultural artist. Since 1991, Tutson has used storytelling to connect diverse cultures and generations, drawing on African traditions and diasporic heritage. She is a founding member of the Rhode Island Black Storytellers and has led workshops and performances nationwide and internationally.

J.L. “Lynn” Singleton was awarded the Civic Impact Award for his transformative leadership as President of the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) since 1983. Singleton revitalized PPAC from near bankruptcy into a premier nonprofit theater, enhancing tourism and hosting numerous national Broadway tours. His efforts also included restoring the historic 1928 building and founding a successful theatrical management company. Singleton’s accolades include multiple leadership awards and induction into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame in 2023.

Cortney Nicolato received the Joseph A. Chazan, M.D. Community Impact Award for her leadership as President and CEO of United Way of Rhode Island. She spearheaded a $100 million investment initiative focused on racial equity, education, housing, and economic mobility, achieving its goals ahead of schedule. Nicolato’s approach emphasizes collaboration, data-driven strategies, and community engagement, redefining nonprofit impact in Rhode Island.
