The Crook Point Bascule Bridge in Providence is slated for demolition by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) in 2026-2027 unless the city intervenes. Mayor Brett Smiley has shown interest in transferring ownership of the bridge from the state to the city and establishing a Crook Point Bridge Authority to manage its redevelopment. The City Council’s Ordinance Committee unanimously passed a resolution urging the Rhode Island General Assembly to create this authority, which would oversee the bridge’s maintenance and development as a public landmark.
City officials, including Chief Operating Officer Courtney Hawkins, emphasized the urgency of action to prevent demolition, noting that $6 million is allocated in the state transportation budget for tearing down the bridge. If the city does not act, these funds will be redirected to other projects like the nearby cruise terminal at India Point. While no concrete redevelopment plans currently exist, the authority would manage future decisions. The proposal now awaits legislative approval, with the authority’s board members appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the City Council. Without swift city action, the historic bridge faces removal.
