New Urban Arts (NUA), a Providence nonprofit founded in 1997, provides a free, drop-in afterschool studio where Rhode Island high school students explore art in a supportive environment. Serving over 1,000 youth annually through workshops, exhibitions, and programs, NUA emphasizes creativity, community, and empowerment. The studio offers resources and mentorship that help students overcome barriers to artistic opportunities. Executive Director Jannelle Codianni highlights the importance of creating a space where young people feel seen, heard, and valued, fostering their confidence and expanding their possibilities.

NUA’s flagship programs include Youth Mentorship in the Arts, pairing artists with students for guidance, and the Life After School (ALAS) initiative, which supports college and career readiness through internships, microgrants, and thematic summer projects. Since 2017, NUA Knights has brought youth-led activities directly into Central High School, offering diverse clubs and programs. Under Codianni’s leadership, NUA continues to strengthen community ties and alumni engagement, focusing on agency, connection, and belonging through creative expression. The organization remains committed to being an accessible, safe space that empowers young people to freely express themselves and pursue promising futures.
