The Providence Preservation Society’s Most Endangered Places (MEP) list, now in its 29th year in 2026, has featured 140 unique sites across Providence since 1994. These listings encompass a wide range of structures, including office towers, green spaces, homes, schools, and industrial buildings. While 20 individually listed buildings have been demolished, 101 remain standing, with 20 of those adaptively reused for new purposes. Some sites have appeared repeatedly on the list, such as the Industrial Trust Building and Old Temple Beth El, each listed 11 times, and the Dexter Training Ground & Cranston Street Armory, listed 12 times. The list has also included symbolic and thematic nominations, notably the entire city of Providence in 2021 due to climate change threats. The oldest building ever listed is the Richard Brown House, dating back to 1731, while the newest is Providence Place Mall, constructed in 1999 and listed in 2026. Over the years, the MEP has highlighted a variety of endangered properties, including 36 residential buildings, numerous mills, and 15 schools. Recent demolitions include Gilbert Stuart Middle School (2025) and the Urban League of Rhode Island Building (2024), underscoring ongoing preservation challenges in the city.
