The City Council’s Ordinance Committee unanimously passed a resolution urging the Rhode Island General Assembly to create this authority, which would manage the bridge as a public landmark. City officials emphasized the urgency, noting that $6 million allocated for demolition could be redirected to other projects, such as the nearby cruise terminal, if the bridge is taken down. However, no concrete redevelopment plans currently exist. The proposed authority would include three members appointed by the mayor and approved by the council. While some council members question the bridge’s potential use, others highlight its historical significance. Without swift city action, RIDOT plans to proceed with demolition, effectively ending preservation efforts.
