Providence Teachers Union Hosts Informational Picket on Freezing School Conditions

Sindicato De Profesores De Providence Realiza Piquete Informativo Por Frío En Escuelas

Date: Nov 6, 2026 6 de November, 2026

The Providence Teachers Union (PTU) held an informational picket outside the Providence Public School District offices to protest freezing conditions in multiple schools, where classroom temperatures dropped as low as 53 degrees. Despite the district delivering some space heaters, electrical issues such as blown fuses disrupted technology-dependent lessons, causing learning loss. PTU President Lindsay Paiva criticized the district for mismanaging funds that should have been allocated to boiler maintenance. She highlighted that several schools, including Central High and Hope High, remain without heat due to condemned or nonfunctional boilers, with parts being scavenged from one school to repair others. Paiva demanded transparency on boiler inspections and maintenance plans, as well as the inclusion of student and teacher representatives on the School Building Committee to prevent future neglect. The union also called for policies to address unsafe classroom temperatures and the release of service contracts for heating systems. The action aims to raise awareness and pressure the district to prioritize safe, warm learning environments, especially as contract negotiations approach.
