The Providence Commemoration Lab, funded by the Mellon Foundation and the American Rescue Plan, was a collaborative initiative between the Department of Art, Culture and Tourism (ACT) and the Rhode Island Historical Society (RIHS) from 2023 to 2025. The program focused on creating temporary public art projects that explored commemoration as a collective process of historical redress and spatial reclamation. Nine artists were commissioned for year-long residencies starting in spring 2024, working at three key sites in Providence: Columbus Square, Roger Williams Park, and Public Street. The Lab’s total budget was $1.4 million, spent over two years. To document and share the project’s outcomes, ACT and RIHS partnered with Studio Loba and bookmaker Ruchika Nambiar to produce a limited-edition book featuring contributions from artists, administrators, researchers, and writers involved in the Lab. Only 200 physical copies were printed and are available at various libraries and cultural institutions across Rhode Island. An online version of the book is also accessible, broadening public access to the Lab’s exploration of memory and culture in Providence.
