Writing the Contemporary Gothic

Gothic fiction never disappeared—it traded castles and candlelight for suburbs, campuses and inherited homes. In this three-session generative workshop, we’ll explore how contemporary writers reinvent Gothic traditions through atmosphere, haunting, psychology and place. Readings will include work by Mariana Enriquez, Toni Morrison, Leslie Marmon Silko, Kelly Link, and Mona Awad, among others. We’ll start with an introduction to the genre and its history, spend some time with the haunted house subgenre, then focus on the "regional Gothic” (with a special look at New England as a Gothic site). Through discussion and creative prompts, participants will learn techniques for building dread, crafting charged settings, layering the past into the present and transforming ordinary places into sites of unease, then apply them to their own works-in-progress.
Open to fiction writers of all levels. This is a 3-week workshop, with a 2-hour session each week. Please prepare for approximately 2 hours of work between sessions.

La ficción gótica nunca desapareció—cambió castillos y luz de velas por suburbios, campus y casas heredadas. En este taller generativo de tres sesiones, exploraremos cómo los escritores contemporáneos reinventan las tradiciones góticas a través de la atmósfera, el acecho, la psicología y el lugar. Las lecturas incluirán obras de Mariana Enriquez, Toni Morrison, Leslie Marmon Silko, Kelly Link y Mona Awad, entre otros. Comenzaremos con una introducción al género y su historia, dedicaremos un tiempo al subgénero de la casa encantada, y luego nos centraremos en el “gótico regional” (con una mirada especial a Nueva Inglaterra como un sitio gótico). A través de la discusión y ejercicios creativos, los participantes aprenderán técnicas para construir el temor, crear escenarios cargados, superponer el pasado en el presente y transformar lugares ordinarios en sitios de inquietud, para luego aplicarlas a sus propios trabajos en progreso.
Abierto a escritores de ficción de todos los niveles. Este es un taller de 3 semanas, con una sesión de 2 horas cada semana. Por favor, prepárese para aproximadamente 2 horas de trabajo entre sesiones.
